Couples
Counselling

I do not just work with clients on a one to one basis but I also work with couples. The same confidential agreement applies where couples are concerned. It is important that couples attend sessions together from day one. It would be not possible for me ethically to work with a couple if one of the partners decide to start therapy solo and then shift to couple therapy with me at a later date. This is because at that point I would be that particular client's therapist and I would not want to be biased when the second party joins therapy. The dynamic between clients and therapist in couple therapy changes completely than that present during one to one sessions. The therapist has to work hard to be non judgmental towards both parties and needs to keep a non-biased stance during session. It is extremely important to process feelings experienced by both parties. In this setting the relationship becomes the client. Both individuals need to be validated and seen both by the therapist and by each other. Reaching mutual understanding of each other's view points on their issues is one of the most common goals of couples' counselling but obviously each couple tell a different story and each relationship has its own goals and aims to be achieved in the safe space of the counselling room. Just like individual therapy, couple counselling is offered on Skype.
